Can Sickness Be the Wrath of God Abiding on a Sinner (John 3:36)?
While there ARE cases of sickness being the demonstrated wrath of God even in the New Testament (see Sickness as Chastening and Judgment in the New Testament), they are not what John 3:36 is talking about.
John 3:36:
He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
This verse shows us that unbelievers are under judgment for their sins; this is why they need to be saved, as Jesus offers the only way to avoid divine judgment. This is similar to His earlier statement:
John 3:18:
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
Does this mean that unbelievers are already experiencing condemnation in hell? Clearly not. But the death sentence of hell belongs to them and receiving Jesus is the only way to cancel it. So both of these verses must be understood to talk of an inevitable future condemnation for those who continue to reject Jesus. They are not talking about a present-day judgment for sins.
Thus, John 3:36 cannot be used to teach that sickness is the present-day wrath of God on someone. Physical discomfort will be part of the future eternal wrath of God in hell.
If sickness were the present-day wrath of God on sinners, Jesus would have gone around making healthy sinners sick. Instead, He healed sick sinners despite their sins.
