Can Your Mind Heal You Without Jesus?

I believe that there are some cases where your mind can heal you, but why would you want to do it without Jesus?  Jesus never preached that people should heal themselves using their minds.  Certain “mind science” cults, so-called Christian Science “churches” being the most notorious, exalt the mind and deny Christ’s blood atonement, sending their adherents to an eternity in the lake of fire that their minds will never get them out of.

Having said that, medical science has demonstrated that in some cases, people with good mental attitudes can recover more quickly than people with bad mental attitudes.  However, people like the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:25-34 who are medically incurable cannot necessarily get any results at all by changing their attitudes.

Medical science has also proved the mind’s healing power with placebo studies where people were given pills that they thought would cure them even though the pills had no medicinal value.  They sometimes reported positive health benefits simply because they believed that the pills were doing something.  Our minds are wonderful creations of God.

Given that some illnesses are psychosomatic, meaning that people’s minds are making them sick, it should stand to reason that sufferers of such conditions can change their thinking and get healed.  Hypochondriacs, a known category of people who are overwhelmed by fear of having a serious condition that has never been clinically proven, could change their thinking and stop reaping the bad fruit of the sin of anxiety.

It’s better to think positively than negatively, but positive thinking never got anyone out of eternal judgment.  It’s a good thing but not the most important thing.

We’re told to renew our minds (Romans 12:2) so clearly, we will do better with minds thinking in agreement with the Word rather than against it.  Healing comes more easily when you know the Word, but that is because it puts you in a better position to receive the healing Jesus paid for you to have, not because sheer mind power gets you healed.
