Objection: The Church Outgrew Spiritual Gifts and Now Walks in Love, Which Is a More Excellent Way (1 Corinthians 12:31)

1 Corinthians 12:31:
But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

Paul did NOT say, “Don’t bother desiring ANY spiritual gifts anymore because there’s a more excellent way – love!”  He didn’t say that we had to choose one over the other.  We should have both!

He said at the end of the next chapter that love is greater than faith and hope (1 Corinthians 13:13).  If we were to follow the objector’s failed logic, we would conclude that we should not bother with either faith or hope anymore because love is better.  As with the subject verse, it is not a case of choosing one thing to the exclusion of another.   There is no question that love is more important, but that doesn’t mean that spiritual gifts, hope and faith aren’t important.

This objection is ruined by the following verse:

1 Corinthians 14:1:
Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

There you have it.  We are to pursue love AND spiritual gifts, not only love, even though love is more excellent that spiritual gifts.  You never “outgrow” something that God wants you to have!

This objection assumes that spiritual gifts are not for today, but you can dispense with this dispensationalism by clicking the link below.
